Multi-language support: Making transit accessible to communities in the U.S.
Kuba's mobility app is a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solution for public transit agencies, cities, and their citizens. We aim to help our customers be as inclusive as possible in their communities. To this end, we offer functionality that allows the easy adoption of new languages.
Multi-language support: U.S. law
Offering multiple languages to meet the local community's needs ensures that U.S. transit agencies comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law states that "no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, colour, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Under this law, many cities identify languages other than English spoken in their area and then identify key documents that need to be offered in these languages. This is known as a 'Safe Harbour Threshold', calculated by dividing the population estimate for a language group that "Speaks English less than very well" by the county's total population.
Language diversity in the U.S.
According to the U.S. Census, 382 languages are spoken in the U.S., with English and Spanish being the most widely spoken. Still, individual cities can be home to other significant non-English language speaking communities. Hence, services such as transit need to be offered in different languages to be inclusive and meet the needs of more people.
App language capabilities
Kuba's app solution can feature multiple languages and automatically detect the device's language. Our platform is configured to operate in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, French, Russian, Gujarati, Korean, Hindi, Somali, and Arabic. For example, the Charlotte Area Transit System CATS-Pass app, powered by Kuba, launched with nine languages and later added Arabic as a tenth language.
Driving community inclusion
By integrating robust multi-language support, Kuba ensures transit agencies can foster inclusivity, meet their legal requirements and provide seamless access for all riders.
Kuba’s mobility app is a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solution for public transit agencies, cities, and their citizens. Our platform is designed to be inclusive, connecting the dots of multimodal journeys and making public transit an easy choice for all riders.
